Abstract

It is expected that in the near future, the civil engineering community will have to produce structures in harmony with the concept of sustainable development through the use of high-performance materials with low environmental impact that are produced at a reasonable cost. Magnetic water concrete, synthesized from the normal materials used for manufacturing of concrete, provides one route towards this objective. This paper presents the effect of addition of magnetic water on workability, strength and mechanical properties of concrete tested show-encouraging results, and one can easily replace normal water with magnetic water by which quantity of cement used in any concrete mix reduces and can be made as new Eco-friendly construction material for future decades.

Abstract

The present paper describes the effect of addition of wood waste ash (0-30%) in concrete. Wood ash is an admixture: a pozzolana. Wood ash is generated as a by-product of combustion in wood-fired power plants, paper mills, and other wood burning industries. Wood ash has been added to the concrete in varying percentages ranging from 0 to 30%. The compressive strength and tensile strengths of wood ash concrete was evaluated by conducting laboratory experimentation. The results obtained were compared with reference to M30 grade concrete. The paper presents the various details of experimentation and analysis of results to come up with useful conclusion about the utilization of wood waste ash as an admixture in the concrete.

Abstract

Fly ash is one of the residues generated in combustion of coal. Fly ash is generally captured from the chimneys of power generation facilities. Fly ash includes substantial amounts of silica (SiO₂), both amorphous and crystalline, and lime (CaO). Fly ash is commonly used to supplement Portland cement in concrete production, where it can bring both technological and economic benefits. Increased awareness of environmental hazards, steep rising prices of building materials, non-availability of space to stock the fly ash and other such factors have generated interest among the researchers to work on the gainful utilization of fly ash as an alternate building material with potential for replacing cement partially in constructions. Fly ash utilization in concrete not only reduces the cost due to cement savings but also contribute to reduced carbon-dioxide emissions contributing to environmental protection. It is well established by now that the concrete structures exposed to acidic environments deteriorated much faster when compared to their counterparts in non-aggressive environments. High-Performance-Concrete (HPC) is a new generation concrete which has the potential to perform well in aggressive environments. This paper presents the details of an experimental investigation planned to utilize fly ash in production of HPC. Acid attack tests have been conducted to measure the durability of HPC. This investigation is undertaken to study and define a better HPC mix containing locally available fly ash which can sustain in chloride and sulphate environments. The investigation examines the progressive deterioration of concrete mixtures containing various combinations of fly ash based HPC mixes exposed to sulphate and chloride solutions.

Abstract

Utilization of recycled aggregates in the production of concrete is now given lot of emphasis as it is viewed as an effective waste management practice, which can substantially contribute for the reduction of environmental deterioration. At the same time this is a cost effective technology saving natural resources. Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC) is now being used in many sectors of the construction industry. Though, lot of research has been reported on RAC, very little information is available about the effect of using recycled aggregate in the production of Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC). This paper presents the results of experimentation conducted to evaluate the strength and permeability characteristics of FRC produced with recycled coarse and fine aggregates. Three types of fibres viz., steel, glass and polypropylene were used in the production of FRC. Compressive, tensile, flexural and shear strengths of Fibre Reinforced Recycled Aggregate Concrete (FRRAC) have been evaluated from the experimentation. Chloride ion permeability has been determined as measure of permeability of FRRAC. The results of the study show that recycled coarse and fine aggregates can be successfully used in production of fibre reinforced concrete.
